Sense of Place Blog

1) I believe that sense of place is your view emotionally and physically about a specific place. Sense of place is how you feel about a place and connect to it. How do you feel about your home? The city? It will be different for every place you have visited. For example for home my sense of place includes things such as my mom's cooking or the scene of my childhood bedroom that is lined with stuffed animals, bows from cheerleading, pictures throughout my life and the bed I have slept in for the past 16 years. Home in Franklin, MA will always be my real home. It's where I grew up and I feel so comforted when ever I visit during breaks. Since I now live in Salem going home feels like a vacation. Recently when I visit home I take time to look around the room and think about my life leading up to college. It's the little things in the room that I notice including my small stick balloon from graduation, my cheer bows, my pictures from high school events and my shelves of stuffed animals. I also love seeing my dog and even just petting her in general gives me comfort. I really love my home and my family and I am very excited to go home for christmas break even though I love college it's really nice to be at home. When I go to a city I love seeing the busy streets, skyscrapers and even the noise of the city. Christmas time in the city is also something I really appreciate cities during christmas time, the bright light, big christmas trees and just the happiness in general. Sense of place is different for everyone but to me it's defines what make me appreciate a place.

2) My sense of place in Salem is different. I do like Salem but it's a smaller city so there isn't always a lot to do. I really do like the restaurants though including Howling Wolf. I really appreciate how there are beaches in Salem. I will have anxiety sometimes and walking on the beach really does help. I love hearing the wind and ocean and just seeing the water in general. I love how there are lots of places to walk in Salem. I really love walking it really does keep me calm and mindful. I really love the friends I have met. I have met a lot of nice people to hang out with.

3) I'm honestly not a huge fan of Salem but I really love the University. I really love how I get to cheer and meet tons of new people. I also really love how there are Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts on campus. Even just having dinner with a friend or a group of friends in the dining hall is a good time. I really actually like my room too. Yeah it's small but I personalized it to make it feel like home. I have pictures on a board in my wall, comfy and cute bedding, a microwave and tons of food. I really love being in a community too where I know like everyone on my floor. It's really nice to meet friends and even aquanitiances on your floor. I really love connecting with people on the floor and just stopping by their dorms to say hi. Even the lounge on the floor is a very good place to meet people. I really love Salem State. I have had my rough times but I work through them and I am so much happier here than I was in high school.

4) I didn't think much about sense of place in the beginning of September but now I appreciate it. I had no idea where college would take me or how much more happier I became. I also became a better person which I am happy about. I feel confident and proud and believe I will succeed in the future. I hope to travel more and appreciate more places and just appreciate the little things in life.

College Event

The college event I chose to go to was cheering in the Salem State ice hockey games. I really love cheering. I have been cheering since my senior year of high school which is not that long but I loved it. I love how you can be loud, confident and cheery in the stands. I used to be a very shy person at the beginning of high school (sophomore and freshman year) so the fact that I cheer now and am just outgoing in general really makes me happy. I also really love the girls on the team including the captains. They are super nice and always willing to help. I love the cheers themselves. The cheers are like little dances with chants that are just really fun to do in general. I love even the little things like stomping hard on the bleachers when the game is getting close. I don't think my college experience would have been the same if I didn't do cheer so I am really glad I chose to attend and participate in something I love. Cheering at the games connected to my sense of place because I realize how much I love being with other people and meeting new friends.

Thanksgiving Blog

1) My family does not have a typical Thanksgiving dinner. We have lots of southern style food even though we are not from the south. Are dinner includes fried chicken, mac and cheese, green bean casserole, biscuits, mashed potatoes, gravy and bacon and apple stuffing. For dessert we had cranberry walnut pie, pumpkin pie and chocolate cream pie. The food was very good especially since my mom is such a great cook. After we were full and relaxed and took a rest. The next day me, my sister and my mom went to black friday.

2) I shared Thanksgiving with my family; My mom, dad, 3 brothers and sister. I really enjoyed being with my family especially my mom. Being away at school makes me really appreciate my family more especially my mom. I enjoyed my mom's homemade cooking as well as spending time with them. My mom is the most loving person. She is the person I appreciate the most in my life. She has helped me through everything and is just a great caring woman as well.

3) When I celebrate Thanksgiving I am at my home which is really nice to be home because it's where I lived for 18 years and grown up in. It has my childhood bed, photos and memories.

4) Thanksgiving means a lot to me. I appreciate it even more because of being away and seeing my family. I loved the food and loved seeing my family especially since I see them like once a month. I realize now how much I appreciate my family especially my mom. I love even watching movies with them or even just eating dinner together.

The Other Park Trip

1) This trip contributed to my sense of place because I never realized there was another park in Salem with trails and everything. I liked the other park better but I still did like this park.

2) We were on the bridge above the water near the trails. The water was murky and there were a couple trails and a house by the bridge.

3) I talked to new people in the class and was very open and outgoing. I also noticed just taking a walk was nice and being outside. I met a new friend to during the walk and noticed we had a lot in common. She was in a sorority and I wanted to join a sorority as well and we also both has anxiety. It was nice to find someone who can relate to me.

4) I did like this trip. I enjoyed walking outside and seeing the park. Even being outside and just the enjoyment of walking was nice. I really love walking outside. At home I would always take walks and even at school as well. I enjoyed meeting new people as well. I realized I was very friendly and can relate to anyone. It felt nice that I could strike up a conversation with anyone.

5) There was no slide show.

6) There were no movies.

Triad Experience

1) I was not allowed to take pictures in the museum.

2) I chose to go to the Salem Witch Museum because I was interested in the history of the Witch Trials in Salem in the 1600's.

3) We texted each other but no day worked that we would all be able to go so we went separately.

4) What started the Salem Witch Trials?
How long did the trials last?
Where particular in Salem did the witch trials take place?
How many people died in jail that were accused of being witches?
What were witch trials like in Europe?

5)  For my experience, I went to the Salem Witch Museum. It was nice because it was free for Salem State students. I enjoyed my experience however was easily frightened so sometimes I wouldn’t look fully at the presentation but I listened. The experience was interesting because I never realizes that it was young girls who started the witch trials. The tour guide was interactive too and explained the presneantion to us. The presentation was eerie to show the importance and tragedy of the trials. It really made you think more that it was a scary thing that happened in the 15th century in Salem. I enjoyed my experience, they also had voiceovers from models in the presentation so it sounded especially realistic.
The experience at the museum itself was good as well. The tour guide was very expressive and the exhibits were interactive. There was one exhibit that explained how a pagan overtime became accused of being a witch. Another exhibit explained the religion of Wicca which sounded nothing like witchcraft. They explained how people of Wicca are normal people, where normal clothes and live in normal areas, they just have a more ancient religion. It’s hard to see how something as harmless as Wicca could be identified as evil and seen as witchcraft or the work of the devil.

6) This trip contributed to my sense of place because I realized that there was a lot that went on in the town and land I live in today. There was tragedy with the witch trials that went on centers ago where I live today.

7) Why would young girls want to cause such trouble?
Did the puritans think what they were doing to the accused was inhumane
How did the modern day stereotypical witch evolve?
How could a good woman or pagan suddenly become known as an evil figure who asccosiated with the devil?

8) I chose the topic of the Salem Witch Trials for my topic.

9) I read the rubric.

Salem park Reflection 10/24

1)

2)

3) I relate to the trees because we use them to breathe, I relate to the water because of transportation and water for drinking. I relate to the ground because I walk on it. I relate to the air because I breathe it in

4) I didn't know they had a park that close to the university, neither did I know that the water was so close by. The park was beautiful even just the rocky ledge that I sat on where I could see the ocean and sail ships. It would be a perfect place to take a walk especially with a dog.

5) The park plays a role in sense of place for me In Salem because I never realized how beautiful and peaceful it was. I usually just go downtown but the park would be a perfect place to just take a calming walk.

6) I really liked this filed trip especially seeing the ocean. I did not know how close it was to us. The only part I didn't like was the wind and the cold temperature.

7) I actually would like to take more field trips like this one. I really enjoyed the view of the park and especially the ocean.

Panel and Advising

1) When the first year office students came they talked about their experiences at Salem State. One of them was a geography major so I asked her if she had the professor that I liked and she said she did. They also talked about what it was like being an RA which was interesting. They said that succeeding in college also depended on getting help when you need it which I have started doing.

2) Justin said for advising to before seeing your advisor you should have your classes picked out on the Degree Tracker. That was helpful to know because I probably would have shown up to my advisor without my classes picked out.

3) had trouble posting a picture
